N-Acetyl-S-allyl-L-cysteine (NAC) is a natural compound that has been shown to have neuroprotective properties. It attenuates oxidative injury by binding to reactive oxygen species and preventing lipid peroxidation. NAC also protects against neuronal death through its ability to scavenge nitric oxide and inhibit the activation of protein kinase C. NAC also has antioxidant properties, which may be due to its ability to reduce the formation of hydrogen peroxide in the mitochondria. This compound is able to cross the blood brain barrier and bind with high affinity to neurons, making it a potential biomarker for oxidative injury. NAC has been shown in vitro as an effective treatment for chronic oral toxicity in rats, as well as being effective at reducing physiological activities associated with neurotoxicity. NAC also possesses potent antioxidative activity, protecting cells from damage caused by free radicals. The mechanism of this antioxidative effect is not yet known but may be related to
