(R)-2-Acetylthio-3-phenylpropionic acid is a biologically active compound that belongs to the group of thiophenic acids. It is formed by the reaction of an amino acid with hydroxylamine, and has been shown to have antibiotic properties. (R)-2-Acetylthio-3-phenylpropionic acid binds to ribonucleic acid and inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria. It also has been shown to inhibit the growth of E. coli and other gram negative bacteria. The chemical structure of (R)-2-acetylthio-3-phenylpropionic acid is similar to puromycin, which is used as an antibiotic, but it does not bind to DNA or RNA like puromycin does.
