Alcophosphamide is an anticancer drug that inhibits the biological function of cells by interfering with DNA replication and protein synthesis. It binds to the DNA of cells, which prevents ribosomes from translating RNA into protein. Alcophosphamide is rapidly inactivated by deuterium isotope effect. The drug is excreted mainly through urine, but also partly through bile, where it may be hydrolyzed by liver enzymes to aldophosphamide. Alcophosphamide has been shown to inhibit matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity in human liver cells and cancer cell lines at high doses.
