(±)-2-Amino-4-phosphonobutyric acid (APBA) is a neurotransmitter that acts as an agonist at the GABA receptor. It has been shown to have physiological effects in granule neurons, such as locomotor activity, neuronal death, and axonal growth. In addition, it has been shown to have pharmacological effects in cultured cells, such as glutamate and caudate putamen. It has also been demonstrated to inhibit the binding of ligands to GABA receptors. This inhibition may be due to its ability to block the synthesis or release of endogenous ligands for the GABA receptor.
