Allo maltol is an organometallic compound that contains a hydroxy group. It has been shown to form stable complexes with hydrocarbons and unsaturated alkyls, which may be due to its ability to reversibly bind to the metal center of the organic ligands. Allo maltol has been shown to exhibit anticancer activity in vitro against MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells by inhibiting DNA synthesis and promoting apoptosis. This agent also prevents the proliferation of glioma cells in vitro and reduces tumor size in vivo in a mouse model. Allo maltol also has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division as well as increasing their sensitivity towards antibiotics.
