4-Aminosalicylic acid calcium salt heptahydrate is an anti-tuberculosis drug that belongs to the group of alkanoic acid derivatives. It is a major metabolite of 4-aminosalicylic acid, which is formed from the amino acid methionine by the enzyme phenol-O-methyltransferase. The compound inhibits bacterial growth and has been shown to be effective against strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis resistant to traditional anti-tuberculosis drugs. 4-Aminosalicylic acid calcium salt heptahydrate also inhibits the production of inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF) in macrophages, and has been shown to have beneficial effects on bowel disease and inflammatory bowel disease. The mechanism of action may involve its ability to inhibit toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), which leads to reduced expression of inflammatory genes.
