4(5)-Amino-1H-imidazole-5(4)-carbonitrile is a water soluble, low molecular weight molecule that is not very stable to heat and light. In a photochemical reaction, the protonated form of 4(5)-amino-1H-imidazole-5(4)-carbonitrile reacts with phosphorus pentachloride in an adenosine receptor to form a chloride and phenyl group. The latter reacts with an adenosine receptor to produce an imidazole ring. This reaction mechanism is abiotic and does not require the presence of enzymes or cofactors. 4(5)-Amino-1H-imidazole-5(4)-carbonitrile has been shown to have activity at the adenosine A3 receptor.
