3-Amino-1-methyl-5H-pyrido[4,3-b]indole acetate (AMPA) is a naturally occurring compound that has been shown to have antioxidant activity. It has been found to protect against bladder cancer in rats exposed to ethyl methanesulfonate and to reduce liver lesions induced by this chemical in f344 rats. AMPA has also been shown to inhibit the uptake of cytochrome P450 in human liver cells and the uptake of tryptophan into human lymphocytes. AMPA has been shown to be an antimutagenic agent and is a substrate for symporters.
