6-Amino-2-hydroxymethyl hexan-1-ol (6AOH) is a small molecule that is generated in vivo by the enzymatic conversion of amino acid lysine. This glycolytic intermediate has been implicated in a number of biological processes, including immune function and viral inhibition. 6AOH was shown to bind to the epidermal growth factor receptor and activate it, thereby triggering a signaling cascade that leads to the proliferation of keratinocytes. 6AOH also binds to epidermal growth factor, which activates the same signaling pathway. 6AOH may activate other receptors with similar signaling pathways. These activities make this molecule a potential drug candidate for treating skin diseases such as psoriasis or ichthyosis.
