2-Amino-3-methyl-3H-imidazo[4,5-h]quinoline (IQ) is a promutagen and antimutagen that can be used as a dietary supplement to promote healthy gastrointestinal flora. IQ has been shown to inhibit the growth of Salmonella typhimurium in a dose dependent manner. Promutagens are mutagens that cause DNA damage by binding to DNA and preventing replication, leading to mutations in the DNA sequence. IQ inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the cell wall, inhibiting protein synthesis and causing cell death.
