3-Amino-5-chloro salicylic acid methyl ester is a synthetic chemical that can be used as an intermediate for the production of azasetron hydrochloride. 3-Amino-5-chloro salicylic acid methyl ester is synthesized by refluxing 3,5-dichlorosalicylic acid with methanol in the presence of hydrochloric acid and chlorination. The reaction solution is decompressed to remove hydrogen chloride gas. The salt formed is dissolved in water and then reacted with stannous chloride to produce azasetron hydrochloride. This chemical has a strong aminating property, which makes it useful for the synthesis of other compounds such as acetanilides or phenols.
