4-Aminobutyramide hydrochloride is a chemical compound that belongs to the group of amides. It is a structural analogue of butyric acid, which is a four-carbon fatty acid that has an unpleasant odor. 4-Aminobutyramide hydrochloride is used in biochemical research to study changes in morphology and other biochemical events. In cerebral tissue, it can be seen as an amorphous substance with a yellowish tinge. It is soluble in water and alcohols and has a neutral pH. This compound reacts with hydrogen chloride (HCl) to form hydroxybenzylidenehydrochloric acid (HBHA), which reacts with cyanate ions to produce cyanate ion. The primary amino group on the benzyl group also reacts to produce an oxime (-NO).
