Product Information
- D-Sorbosonic acid
Ascorbic acid impurity C is a catalytic impurity found in ascorbic acid-containing pharmaceuticals. It is metabolized to sulfate and iodoacetic acid, the latter of which is excreted in the urine. Ascorbic acid impurity C is also a metabolic product of 5-keto-d-gluconic acid, which can be synthesized from d-glucose or d-mannose. The transferase enzyme catalyzes the conversion of d-glucose to 5-keto-d-gluconic acid, while the enzyme d-mannose oxidoreductase converts d-mannose to 5 keto-d-gluconic acid. This impurity has been found in natural leaf extracts and synthetic ascorbic acids.
