Acetaminophen is a drug that is used as an analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory medication. Acetaminophen d3 is the deuterium version of acetaminophen. It can be detected in wastewater effluent by using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) with a dry weight method. Acetaminophen d3 has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of prostaglandins in human livers at concentrations that are comparable to those found in humans taking therapeutic doses of acetaminophen. This inhibition may be due to its ability to inhibit both cyclooxygenase and peroxidase enzymes. Acetaminophen d3 has also been shown to potentiate the effect of carbamazepine and phenytoin on ppcps activity, which may explain its effect on the metabolism of these drugs.
