P-Aminophenyl arsenoxide is a synthetic compound that has been used to study the effect of apoptotic cell death in mammalian cells. It has been shown to induce apoptotic cell death in fibrosarcoma cells, and also induces cancer cell death in human breast cancer cells. P-Aminophenyl arsenoxide is synthesized from p-aminophenol and arsenic trioxide. The recombinant proteins are hydrolyzed by hydrochloric acid, which causes the release of the amino group from the aminophenol moiety. This leaves an unstable intermediate, which undergoes photochemical cleavage to form p-aminophenylarsenic acid. P-Aminophenylarsenic acid can be further oxidized to form p-aminophenylarsenate ion or reduced to form phenylacetate ion. P-Aminophenylarsenate ion is cytotoxic because it inhibits protein synthesis and enzyme activity in mammalian cells due to its dis
