3-Acetyl-L-tyrosinehydrochloride is a synthetic compound that has been used as a starting material for the synthesis of other compounds. It is an ester of 3-acetyltryptophan and L-tyrosine. The optical antipode of this compound was synthesized in 1983, although it has not been studied extensively. The yield of 3-acetyltyrosine hydrochloride is about 45%. The product can be purified by crystallization from water or acetone and recrystallization from benzene or ether. The reaction with benzaldehyde produces 3-(2,4-dihydroxyphenyl)propionic acid ethyl ester (1). This reaction also produces pyrrolidine (2), which is the key intermediate for the synthesis of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD).
