Description

Androsta-1,4,6-triene-3,17-dione is an irreversible inhibitor of aromatase. It binds to the active site of the enzyme and inhibits its activity. This agent has been shown to be effective in treating breast cancer patients with high levels of estradiol benzoate. It also has a stimulating effect on locomotor activity in rats and shows high values in cell nuclei. Androsta-1,4,6-triene-3,17-dione is used for model organisms such as mouse and rat liver microsomes and can be prepared by sample preparation techniques such as thin layer chromatography (TLC). The optimum concentration for biological activity is between 0.01 to 100 μM. Androsta-1,4,6-triene-3,17-dione can inhibit the production of estrogen by binding to the enzyme aromatase and preventing this conversion from occurring.
