Arecaidine is a quinolone antibiotic that is used for the treatment of bacterial infections. It has been shown to inhibit cell growth in animal studies and to be toxic in certain cases, although it does not appear to have carcinogenic potential. A number of different antibiotics are currently being used to combat resistant strains of bacteria, but only a few have been successful. The use of arecaidine as a new antibiotic may provide an alternative treatment option for these resistant strains. Arecaidine has been shown to bind to the cell nuclei and inhibit protein synthesis, although it has a low potency and is not as effective as tetracycline or erythromycin.
