5-Aza-7-deazaguanine (also known as AZA) is an antiviral agent that inhibits viral DNA synthesis by inhibiting the enzyme catalysis of viral DNA polymerase. It is a nucleoside analog that is used to treat herpes simplex virus (HSV). It has also been shown to be effective against other types of viruses, including adenovirus and human papilloma virus. The mechanism of action of 5-Aza-7-deazaguanine relies on its incorporation into the growing DNA chain during replication, which causes misreading of the genetic code. This misreading can lead to premature termination of protein synthesis, resulting in cell death. AZA has also been shown to have cytotoxic effects on tumor cells in tissue culture and cell culture.
