5-Azido oseltamivir is a synthetic ligand that binds to the viral neuraminidase and inhibits influenza virus replication. It has been shown to be effective against most strains of the influenza virus, including seasonal H1N1 and H5N1 strains. This drug has been synthesized to inhibit the activity of the viral neuraminidase enzyme that cleaves sialic acid from glycoproteins on cell surfaces, which prevents new viruses from spreading. 5-Azido oseltamivir also inhibits viral replication by acting as a competitive inhibitor with respect to substrate binding sites in the active site of the viral neuraminidase enzyme.
