N-(4-Azido-2-nitrophenyl)-2-aminoethylsulfonate, sodium salt, dihydrate (NENPS) is a transport inhibitor that is used to study the transport properties of cells. This compound is a stilbene derivative with a sulfonic acid group at the 4 position. NENPS binds to the subunit of ATP synthase, which is responsible for the transport of ions and sugar into the cell. It irreversibly inhibits ATP synthase by binding to cysteine residues on the enzyme's F1 subunit. NENPS also binds to calcium ions in the cell membrane, which may be due to its ability to form disulfide bonds and compete for uptake sites on red blood cells.
