5-Aminosalicylic acid sodium is a pro-inflammatory agent that has been shown to inhibit the growth of staphylococcus. It also possesses antibacterial activity and inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1β and TNFα, in subtilis. 5-Aminosalicylic acid sodium is an aminoglycoside antibiotic with a chemical structure similar to that of gentamicin. It has a strong affinity for chloride ions due to its electron configuration, which leads to its accumulation in the intestinal tract and inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the ribosomes where it inhibits protein synthesis. The molecule can also be used as a ligand in nmr spectroscopy.
