2-Amino-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole is a chemical compound with the formula HNCHS. It is a white solid that is soluble in water and polar organic solvents. The compound has been shown to inhibit the growth of Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis by inhibiting enzymes that are involved in the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids. 2-Amino-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole also inhibits the growth of Gram negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium by inhibiting enzymes that are involved in fatty acid synthesis. 2AMT was originally synthesized for use as an antimicrobial agent but has not yet been used clinically.
