2-Amino-4-hydroxy-6-ethylpyrimidine is a cinnamic acid derivative that is used as a sunscreen. This compound absorbs UV radiation and may also stabilize the sunscreens to prevent degradation. It is structurally similar to phenylephrine hydrochloride, with the only difference being an amino group on the 2 position of the pyrimidine ring. This compound has been shown to have viscosity decreasing properties, which can be attributed to its ability to denature proteins found in skin oils. The chloride ion pairs with the hydroxyl group on the 2 position of the pyrimidine ring and forms a negatively charged ion pair. The cationic form of this compound may bind with an anionic surfactant such as dodecyl or cetylpyridinium chloride, which would increase its solubility in water and allow it to be used as a sunscreen in cosmetics.
