Product Information
Actin is a globular, monomeric protein that is involved in a wide range of cellular functions. It is one of the most abundant proteins in eukaryotic cells and is found in both the cytoplasm and nucleus. Actin has been shown to be involved in cell motility, regulation of cell shape, microfilament assembly, and intracellular transport. This protein also exhibits biochemical properties such as polymerase chain activity and disulfide bond formation. Actin is activated by ATP binding to its N-terminal domain and hydrolysis of ATP to ADP results in the release of actin from the filament. Actin can also be regulated transcriptionally by extracellular signals or by posttranscriptional modifications such as phosphorylation or acetylation. The structural analysis of this protein has been studied extensively using X-ray crystallography, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and infrared spectroscopy.
