a-Methyl cinnamic acid is a synthetic compound that is used in the synthesis of drugs for the treatment of cancer. It can be produced by Friedel-Crafts reaction between chloroform, benzaldehyde, and morpholine. The product is recycled as a raw material for production of amide derivatives. The reaction yield is not high and requires large amounts of chloroform and morpholine. In addition to carcinogenic compounds, a-methyl cinnamic acid also contains chloride ions, which are toxic to the environment. Pressor activity has been observed in rats treated with intravenous a-methyl cinnamic acid. Cinchonidine has been shown to be able to inhibit the pressor effects of a-methyl cinnamic acid in rats.
