Ammonium sebacate is a colorless to white crystalline powder that is soluble in water, ethanol, and acetone. It is an electrolyte with a hydroxyl group and a glycol ether. Ammonium sebacate has been used as a solvent for cellulose acetate, polyvinyl acetate, and other resins. It also reacts with phosphorus pentoxide to form ammonium phosphates. This product can be used as an acidulant in food products or as a buffering agent in pharmaceutical formulations. Ammonium sebacate can also be used in the manufacture of dyes and pigments, textile sizing agents, corrosion inhibitors, and solvents for paints or varnishes. When dissolved in water it releases hydrogen ions (H+) and carboxylate ions (COO-). The pH of the solution depends on the concentration of ammonium sebacate.
