Trans-4-aminoadamantan-1-ol is a reactive intermediate that has been shown to inhibit the activity of 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11βHSD) and its cofactor NADP in vitro. This inhibition leads to an increase in glucocorticoids, which are potent anti-inflammatory agents. Trans-4-aminoadamantan-1-ol can be used as a lead compound for the development of novel drugs for the treatment of autoimmune diseases. Trans-4-aminoadamantan-1-ol has also shown inhibitory activities against cytokine receptors with IC50 values ranging from 0.2 to 13 μM.
