1-Acetyl-b-carboline is a chemical compound that has antimicrobial properties. It is a white solid that dissolves in water, alcohol, and ether. 1-Acetyl-b-carboline has been shown to have antibacterial activity against staphylococci and other Gram-positive bacteria. It also has the ability to lyse bacterial cells by disrupting the cell membrane. 1-Acetyl-b-carboline has been found to have significant cytotoxicity against human cancer cells at low concentrations and can be used as an anticancer drug. It also shows antibacterial activity against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates, including their biofilm form. The mechanism of action for 1-acetyl-b-carboline is not well understood but it may involve inhibition of cytochrome P450 or monooxygenase enzymes in the bacterial cell wall synthesis pathway.
