  • m-Cresol, 2-amino-
Description:

2-Amino-m-cresol is a byproduct of heme degradation and is found in the urine of patients with porphyria. It can be detected by mass spectrometry and electrochemical methods. The oxidation products of 2-amino-m-cresol are the reactive species that interact with proteins to form crosslinks. This functional group has been shown to activate the enzyme phospholipase A2, which produces prostaglandins. Enzyme activation leads to an increase in blood pressure, which may be due to increased vascular constriction or increased platelet aggregation. 2-Amino-m-cresol has also been shown to cause hemolysis when oxidized into its reactive product, 2-aminophenylhydroxylamine (APHA).
