Ammonium citrate tribasic is a chemical compound that can be used in wastewater treatment. It is a white, crystalline powder with a melting point of 175°C. The solubility of ammonium citrate tribasic in water is 0.1 g/100 mL at 25°C and pH 7.5. Ammonium citrate tribasic has been shown to react with picolinic acid, an intermediate in the metabolism of tryptophan, to form iron-citrate complexes which are able to bind ferric ions and remove them from solution. Ammonium citrate tribasic also has biochemical properties that can affect iron homeostasis and copper uptake by cells. It has also been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to their cell walls, making it an effective antimicrobial agent for industrial applications as well as for personal care products such as toothpastes and mouthwashes.
