Allyl methyl sulphide is a reactive gas that has been used as an antimicrobial agent in wastewater treatment and as an insecticide. It is a nucleophilic molecule that reacts with amines, thiols, and sulfides to form allyl methyl sulfone. Allyl methyl sulfide also has immunomodulatory effects, which are observed in animal studies. The biological properties of this compound have been studied using tissue samples from mosquitoes. These studies show that allyl methyl sulphide can be effective against bacteria, yeast, and fungi. Allyl methyl sulphide has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by attacking the sulfur atom in their DNA and fatty acids by inhibiting enzymes involved in their metabolism. This results in a decrease of phospholipids, causing cell death and reduced inflammation.
