2-Acetylquinoxaline is a quinoxaline molecule that has been shown to be effective against resistant infections. It is synthesized by dehydrogenative cyclization of ethyl 2-acetylbenzoate and triethyl orthoformate in the presence of ZnCl2, followed by removal of the acetyl group. The biological properties of 2-acetylquinoxaline were studied in vitro through model studies and found that it exhibited antibacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Escherichia coli. 2-Acetylquinoxaline was also shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by inhibiting protein synthesis. The photophysical properties of 2-acetylquinoxaline have been extensively studied with nmr spectroscopy, which indicated it as a potential drug for treatment of tuberculosis.
