3-Aminobenzenethiol is a fluorescence probe that is used to measure nitrite in biological fluids. 3-Aminobenzenethiol reacts with nitrite to form a diazonium salt, which can be detected by Raman spectroscopy. This reaction occurs at the surface of some materials, such as TiO2 and gold nanoparticles, leading to a surface-enhanced Raman effect (SERS). 3-Aminobenzenethiol has functional groups that allow it to react with chloride ions and nucleophilic compounds. These properties make it useful in assays for human serum and brain natriuretic peptide.
