Description

5-Amino-2-methylbenzenesulfonic acid is a sulfonation agent that is used to produce 5-sulfosalicylic acid, which is used as a precursor in the production of dyestuffs. The reaction system consists of an amine and nitrobenzoic acid. The reactive sulfonation agent converts the amine to the corresponding sulfonic acid derivative. This conversion takes place in acidic conditions at elevated temperature, forming a chromatographic peak with a retention time of about 3 minutes. The use of 5-amino-2-methylbenzenesulfonic acid for the production of 5-sulfosalicylic acid has been shown to be effective in wastewater treatment plants.
