2-Amino-5-bromobenzotrifluoride (2ABBG) is an antibacterial agent that inhibits the synthesis of proteins by blocking the activity of ribosomes. 2ABBG blocks ribosomal protein S12, which prevents the formation of peptidyl-tRNA from aminoacyl-tRNA and degrades the peptidyl-transferase center. Inhibition of this enzyme leads to a decrease in bacterial growth. 2ABBG has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria such as Streptococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. This antibiotic is also active against some fungi such as Candida albicans. 2ABBG is usually used in combination with other antibiotics or radiation to increase its effectiveness.
