2-Amino-4-methylthiazole is a chemical compound that inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. It has been shown to have a high degree of cytotoxicity and be mutagenic. 2-Amino-4-methylthiazole is also an antimicrobial agent, which can be used for the treatment of bacterial infections. 2-Amino-4-methylthiazole binds to the active site of acetylcholinesterase by forming a covalent bond with a nitrogen atom in the carbonyl group of the enzyme. The reaction mechanism involves nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl carbon atom and elimination of water. This inhibition prevents hydrolysis of acetylcholine, resulting in acetylcholine accumulation, which causes toxic effects such as increased heart rate and muscle cramps.
