L-Arginine-L-pyroglutamate is a basic protein that is synthesized from L-arginine and pyroglutamic acid. It has chemotactic activity, meaning that it can cause cells to migrate towards the compound. L-Arginine-L-pyroglutamate has been shown to have protease activity against a number of tissue proteins, including collagenases and elastases. The expression plasmid containing the gene for this protein was used to diagnose squamous cell carcinoma in women as well as cervical cancer in mice. The use of L-Arginine-L-pyroglutamate in prognosis and diagnosis of hyperproliferative diseases such as skin cancer may be a promising area for future research.
