Antipain is a protease inhibitor that belongs to the group of natural compounds. It inhibits the activity of a number of proteases, including chymotrypsin, trypsin, elastase and cathepsin B. Antipain has been shown to inhibit the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in vitro and in vivo. The inhibition is due to its ability to bind ATP-binding cassette transporter proteins and thereby block their function. This prevents DNA replication and transcription, leading to cell death. Evidence suggests that antipain also has inhibitory effects on other enzymes such as phospholipases A2, cyclooxygenases, nitric oxide synthases, and lipoxygenases.
