2-Amino-3-nitropyridine is a neuraminidase inhibitor that prevents the release of the virus from infected cells. This compound binds to the active site of influenza neuraminidase, preventing its catalytic activity and inhibiting the release of virus from infected cells. The oxime group can be reduced to form an amine in vivo, which may explain why 2-amino-3-nitropyridine has been shown to be effective against influenza A and B viruses but not the latest H1N1 strain. The synthesis of 2-amino-3-nitropyridine was first reported in 1961 by a team led by G. Küster, who used a novel technique called magnetic stirring to facilitate the reaction. In addition, x-ray crystallographic studies have revealed that 2-amino-3-nitropyridine is a pyrido[2,3,-d]pyrimidine derivative with a protonated nitrogen
