Description:

C.I. Acid Orange 51 is a dye that is used in wastewater treatment and as an absorber in the textile industry. It has been shown to inhibit enzymatic reactions, such as saccharification of starch and cellulose, through cross-linking with fatty acids. C.I. Acid Orange 51 is also used for surface methodology, where it is adsorbed onto polymer film or activated charcoal to create a reactive surface for kinetic studies on organic compounds and their interactions with other molecules.
C.I. Acid Orange 51 can be produced by the oxidation of 2-methyl-5-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-1,3-dioxane with sodium hypochlorite in alkaline solution, followed by acidification with hydrochloric acid and extraction of the dye from the resulting reaction mixture using ethanol or acetone. The dye has a high affinity for fungal biomass and can be used to measure the amount of protein present in fungi grown on agar
