Boswellic acids are natural compounds found in the plant boswellia serrata. They have been shown to inhibit the growth of oral pathogens and have a matrix-effect on human polymorphonuclear leukocytes, which may be due to their ability to regulate intracellular calcium levels. Boswellic acids also inhibit the expression of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines, such as IL-8, MCP-1, and TNF-α. This may be due to their ability to block NF-κB signaling pathways or by preventing DNA binding of transcription factors. 3-Acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (AKBA) has been shown to inhibit Candida glabrata in vitro and in vivo. AKBA inhibits the expression of genes that are essential for infection with C. glabrata, including genes encoding proteins involved in cell wall synthesis, protein synthesis, and drug efflux pumps. These data suggest that AK
