4-Amino-6-fluoroquinazoline (4AFQ) is a protease inhibitor that has been shown to be effective in treating ulcerative colitis. It inhibits the activity of the human neutrophil elastase and cathepsin G, which are enzymes that degrade proteins and are involved in the inflammatory response. 4AFQ has also been shown to have antiatherogenic effects, inhibiting lipid uptake in macrophages and reducing fatty acid synthesis. This drug also induces apoptosis of monocytes, which reduces inflammation by decreasing cytokine production. 4AFQ is used as a probiotic agent for treatment of bacterial infections or as an additive to food products.
