Description:

N-Acetyl-DL-cysteine is a thiol compound that has antioxidant properties. It is used for the treatment of autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. N-Acetyl-DL-cysteine can also be used to treat neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The optimum concentration of this drug in vitro was found to be 50 μM and 100 μM in vivo. This drug has been shown to inhibit neuronal death by reducing oxidative stress and inhibiting lipid peroxidation. The mechanism of action may involve the transfer of sulfhydryl groups from NACD to reactive oxygen species (ROS), which results in the formation of less toxic products. NACD has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against human cancer cells in vitro and in vivo.
