4-Aminopyridine-3-carboxamide is a pyridine nucleoside that is synthesized by competitive inhibition of the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase. It is active against the L1210 cell line and has been shown to inhibit DNA repair in vitro. 4-Aminopyridine-3-carboxamide binds to amines, which may be an optimal reaction for this compound. This drug also has antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2, as well as potent anti-herpes activity against HSV-1 and HSV-2. The 3-(aminobenzamido) moiety of 4-aminopyridine-3-carboxamide inhibits deamidase, which is an enzyme that removes amine groups from proteins.
