Amifostine is a cytotoxic drug that is used as an antidote to radiation or chemotherapy. Amifostine prevents the destruction of erythrocytes and leukocytes, which are important for the maintenance of normal blood circulation and immune system function. Amifostine also has been shown to have chemiluminescence properties and can be used in analytical methods to measure protein-bound drugs. The drug has been shown to have antitumor activity, with a protective effect on squamous cell carcinoma cells in mice.
