- (±)-Abscisic acid
Abscisic acid is a plant hormone that regulates the plant's response to water stress. It inhibits the activity of nitrate reductase and alcohol dehydrogenase, which are enzymes responsible for converting nitrates into nitrites and alcohols into aldehydes, respectively. Abscisic acid also has synergistic effects with other natural compounds such as p-hydroxybenzoic acid, which is used in the synthesis of lignin in plants. Abscisic acid has been shown to be active against insects by inducing changes in their metabolism that lead to insect death. However, abscisic acid does not have any effect on bacteria or fungi.
