D-serine is a neurotransmitter that functions as an agonist of the NMDA receptor. It has been shown to be effective in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as depression and Alzheimer's disease. D-serine can be synthesized by reacting azetidine with l-glutamic acid in the presence of rhodium or ionic catalysts. This reaction produces a mixture of products, including d-serine, which is purified by recrystallization from ethanol. D-serine has been shown to function as an excitatory neurotransmitter by facilitating the release of glutamate, which can produce a neurotoxic effect on nerve cells.
