Z-L-alanine amide is a potent inhibitor of serine proteases. It has been shown to inhibit the activity of herpes simplex virus type 1, HIV-1, and hepatitis C virus. Z-L-alanine amide is selective for serine proteases and does not inhibit other enzymes such as cysteine proteases. This inhibitor can be used to study the mechanism of action of protease inhibitors in vivo.
