Acetyl-D-alanine methyl ester is a hydrophobic, water-insoluble additive that is used in the production of phosphotungstic acid. It has been shown to catalyze the reactions of hydrogenation and phosphorylation with high substrate concentrations. Acetyl-D-alanine methyl ester has also been used as a stereospecific, homogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of d-alanine from racemic amino acids. The mesoporous form of this compound is expressed by means of a biocatalyst and has been shown to mediate the conversion of 2-aminoethanol to 2-aminoacetic acid.
